We are less than 2 weeks away from the start of #jazznewbloodALIVE 2016, part of London Jazz Festival, possibly the first London jazz festival with a full line-up of new young talented jazz players under 24 presenting, not released, original music, some of them playing their original repertoire for the first time.
Our acts are all unsigned and the quality and maturity of their original repertoire justifies their own stage. 42 talented, trained jazz players, natural improvisers with #jazzdna from organisations like Tomorrow´s Warriors, NYJO, NYJC, Royal Academy of Music, Trinity, LIFE, using improvisation as a channel to express their influences and heritage. This new generation who grow up listening to Hip Hop, Funk, Rock as much as they listen to Miles Davis, John Coltrane or Monk, respect the essence of Jazz but what to live/express it without rules and limitations. They want the freedom to incorporate everything that they are...just like jazz is supposed to be lived an experienced. This may not go well on the most purist jazz fans but since when Jazz was ever pure? They will show us #jazzfuturenow
On the 13 NOV between 3-7pm at Iklectik, this gem in the middle of London in walking distance from Southbank Center and Waterloo station, we are showcasing, 3 unique ensembles, Tommy Remon 4tet, Ridout 6tet and Seed.
First on stage: Guitarist, TOMMY REMON & his quartet emerged from the Tomorrow’s Warriors Organisation, which encourages young British jazz talent. Currently playing hard bop and modal tunes from the jazz canon, he will dedicate this set , at our series, to his original compositions very much inspired by John Coltrane vibe. On stage with him will be Zoe Pascal on drums, Michael Shrimpling on dbass and Joe Elliot on sax.
Following, RIDOUT 6TET , a special sextet featuring siblings Tom Ridout (saxophones) and Alex Ridout (trumpet and flugelhorn) performing a diverse set of original tunes by Tom and Alex and other band members.
Brother and sister competed at this year BBCYoungMusician Jazz Award finals. Alexandra, who just turned 18, wins the competition and is establishing herself as one of the most talented young female musicians in UK.
On Stage with Alex and Tom will be Noah Stoneman on Piano, Freddie Jensen on bass, Miles Minlin on Guitar and Luca Caruso on Drums.
To close our first day, we present SEED.
Formed in early 2016, SEED Ensemble is a ten-piece band led by alto saxophonist and composer Cassie Kinoshi.
The project presents a stellar line-up featuring some of London’s most up-and-coming young jazz musicians including tuba player Theon Cross and tenor saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael. Combining jazz with inner-city London, West African and Caribbean influenced groove, SEED explores a blend of genres through both original compositions and arrangements.
